This past weekend was the first annual LEFTover Cup oval trophy race at Redneck RC‘s new location. LEFTover (as in the weekend after Thanksgiving, ya know? Turkey.. Ha). They put in a brand new, super flat, fast carpet track next to their indoor offroad track and this was the first big race on it. Here is the announcement post if you missed it. The weather was favorable (roads weren’t horrible), so we had a lot of out-of-town guys show up, making for some AWESOME racing action and a packed house.
The race had a total of 96 entries (last I counted, I heard unconfirmed reports it got up to 99) across all classes. I believe the most popular class was the TOUR Super Truck class, followed closely by the TOUR Stock class. That makes it the biggest oval race in the area so far this winter season. For the first big race at their new location, that’s pretty impressive if you ask me. There was a lot of buzz about the track when it was getting installed, and it looks like curiosity caught everyone this weekend.
It was great to see guys from so many different tracks and manufacturers (CRC, Pemberton Raceworks, KCM, etc) come out and make it to the event. As one of the sponsors of the race, I want to personally thank each and every one of you for coming out. It was a pleasure meeting and talking with those that came over and said hello.
They kicked the day off with open practice and then went into 4 minute controlled practice sessions. Justin Kelly did a great job on the mic calling out practice and keeping everyone going and lined up (as well as calling out the occasional wreck).
At 11:30 we had the drivers meeting and talked about Tech, marshalling, and the usual stuff. We then asked everyone to set their car (or at least their body if car was charging, etc) out on the track for a group photo. As Matt Levy announced, we know it was a little inconvenient for some, but it does give a great representation that carpet oval is alive and kicking in the area! We appreciate the effort.
Here’s a shot of the cars with some drivers standing in the infield for the drivers meeting.
More group shots.
My partner in helping plan and organize this event, Matt Levy did the honors of announcing during the drivers meeting. He let everyone know the rules, thanked the sponsors, and kicked the racing day off.
Owner and operator of this fine establishment, Calvin Hall on the mic. He did a majority of the announcing during the day with help from Matt Kitts. Thanks Calvin for giving us racers such an awesome facility to come play with our r/c’s!
Below is a panorama shot of the track from in front of the store window. As you can probably tell, it’s quite decent in size; approx 135′ race line.
Redneck has a white board on the wall with all the track records. I’m pretty sure a few of these were reset during the LEFTover Cup. There was some super fast racing going on.
Below are random track pics for those that couldn’t make it. They will help give you an idea of the facility. There is pitting all around. They are tight, but with races like the New Years Dash, most oval guys know how to pit tight anyways. There are additional pits in the off-road room (where Jarodd and I actually pitted). It’s a little tight walking around the track between folks and the track, but I didn’t hear any major negativity around it.
This pole is the only visual obstacle in the track. It is not an issue, unless your name is Bill Tuttle (USA) (first to tag it). I heard they might be putting some sort of foam around it (maybe a pool noodle) before the next race he comes out here. We love ya Bill :).
My camera is entirely too slow to capture these ballistic cars in action. If anyone wants to donate to the “RC Soup – get a real camera fund”, come see me sometime (or buy something from our store).
One of the heats lined up – TOUR Super Truck.
Back over in our pits, here is Jarodd’s CRC Battle Axe 3.0. Did you guys check out his build article?
My adjoining/overflowing pit area. #toomuchcrap.
My new CRC Razor 3. Build up coming soon. This was the first time this truck ever saw the track. It did ok. I have some work to do before the next event for sure though.
Below are some random shots from the pits. I’m still “out of my element” in the oval scene, and am not yet comfortable going around and shooting pics of everyone and their stuff, but I did what I could without being intrusive (I thought). Speed seems to be a guarded secret in oval sometimes, and while everyone is friendly, it’s hard to tell if people are giving you the whole story when giving you advice. With cars this close in competition it is understandable. Every ounce, every millivolt, seems to make a difference and .1s/lap on the track could be the difference between A-Main and C-Main.
A LOT of iChargers in the pits. I may have to take a closer look at picking up one of those. I love my PL6, but dual output is a great feature to have.
FEAR THE BEARD! CRC’s John “Whopper” Firsching in the house!
Some intense concentration going on in this photo.
These are the pits just outside the “oval room” in the offroad area.
Todd Putnam made it out here for the race.
Below Matt Levy is giving out the awards (printed by Gary’s Precision Graphix). People were anxious to leave as it started snowing, and some folks had up to a 3 hour drive ahead of them, so sadly no official podium shots.

Overall, it was a great event. We ran 2 rounds of qualifying and the mains (with 1 bump up). It was a nice short(ish) day of awesome oval trophy racing, and probably a really good warmup for the New Years Dash that’s coming up next month. Everything went butter smooth, from Tech, to announcing, to the turnout, to the track surface. It was an impressive show put on by Redneck RC and their whole entire race management crew. I cannot wait to do this race again next year!
With that said.. it’s time to gear up for their next event, just 3 weeks away! 10 feet away (with a wall between so the carpet doesnt get dusty) from the oval track shown above, they have this:
The indoor dirt offroad track is getting it’s own first trophy event since moving from the old facility. We help present the Stocking Stuffer Classic!
