Blade Scout CX Review

We don’t do a lot of RC flight content. We are mostly ground guys. A few of us dabble in the flight stuff though, with team Driver Jarodd easily taking the crown as the most experienced. But, I flew RC planes for a couple years. And have been wanting to get into helicopters. What better way to start than with a micro heli?

The Blade Scout CX is pretty small, classified as an ultra micro. The main blade has a 6″ diameter, and the heli weighs in at a whopping .60 oz (17 g). With its light weight, this is an indoor heli. Can it fly outside? Sure it can. But even the slightest breeze will sweep this guy away.

The Scout CX is a 3 channel coaxial helicopter. This means it has two counter-rotating main rotor blades. This design gives the heli incredible stability for its small size. If it is trimmed properly, you can literally just let go of the sticks if you get in trouble and the internal gyro will help the heli right itself.

I’ve been flying this heli for a few months now. I mostly fly it around my house, but have on occasion taken to the office.

iphone pics 172As a beginner heli, the radio has a beginner mode. Beginner mode essentially acts like an end point adjustment on a servo. When you move the stick to yaw the heli forward, it only goes about 50%. You have to press the right analog stick in for a second or two, until you hear a beep, to unlock the full potential of this helicopter. You have to do this every time you use the helicopter, it reverts to beginner mode every time the power is turned on. Even with the full range of controls, this helicopter is still very tame. You can’t get moving very quickly in any direction. This is as designed. It is meant for beginners.

iphone pics 173How does it hold up to abuse you ask? The Scout has stood up to countless crashes, hitting walls, hitting the ceiling, and hard landings. The rotor blades are flexible and soft, so when you hit something with them they bend. Mine have little marks on them from months of use, and the Scout still flies great. The only other thing that happens occasionally is the landing gear will pop out, but they are held on by a little peg that pushes right back into the main frame of the helicopter.

At $50 (at the time of this writing) this has proven to be a great little helicopter for beginners. This helicopter is so stable in flight, that the flying pictures above were taken by me while flying it. I could literally put the controller down if I wanted.

After flying this little guy for the last few months, I know I’m a much more confident pilot. Ok maybe I’m not quite ready for a full 3D aerobatic heli, but I’ll feel much more confident taking the next step. Maybe a quad heli next?
