With the track closed all morning, most people didn’t have a ton to do. It’s a good thing Brian Barretta’s food shack was open. They were there all weekend serving breakfast pizza, regular pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, salt potatoes and more. Gotta keep those racers fed.
The breakfast pizza was dialed!
So noon rolls around and they start letting cars out on the track. As people carried their cars back to the pit it looked more like they just went mud bogging than it did racing. It was bad. The mud lasted through most of the first round until the cars really started to wear in the track. Here are a couple muddy buggies to give you an idea.
Before starting they did put down wood shavings in the key areas holding the most water. This was especially helpful in the low marshalling areas.
Although they did have to put some on the track, which made for an interesting race surface.
Jarodd’s son ventured into no mans land with his SC10 and picked up 1/2 the track. If JConcepts or someone ever needed a photo to sell someone an over tray, this would be that pic.
Good thing CRC runs a legit race facility and has an on site, high power, air compressor (with 2 hoses). They also had a water hose and wash station to really clean the crud off your car. Needless to say, this was a very popular area all weekend.
I opted out of practice and decided to mount up my other set of tires from the Serpent 811 Cobra B-e 2.0 Build. They are JConcepts Hybrids and JConcepts Mono Max-ups wheels. I put them on later in the day and they worked very well.
Mr. Joey Pettinelli brought along a car dedicated to mudding and was running that around to pass the time.
It was going to be a long day with 222 entries across all classes. Despite the lousy forecast (rain), they got a pretty good turnout.
The day went on at a good pace and it was race after race once the show was underway.
It’s plenty tall enough to see CRC’s massive track.
K&D Action Photo was in the house and took some awesome aerial photos. This is what the track looked like probably around mid day on Sat. As you can see, still looks plenty moist but the wood shavings have worked their way to the outside of the lanes.
By Round 2 of qualifying there wasn’t too much dirt building up on the trucks. It was mostly just the tires. Here you can see Solly’s 22SCT hot off the track.
Same story with 4wd SC Class as Geo’s T-RCE Slash 4×4 managed to keep pretty clean compared to Round 1.
The day wore on and it was pretty much Rinse and Repeat as our races were called up (literally rinsing off tires, bodies, etc). Next thing we know we are in the evening hours. We ended up running until almost 1AM and the track crew decided to stop us at Heat 14 of Round 4. The rest would be run at 8AM on Sunday, followed by the Mains.
The track had AWESOME traction at this point. You could tell people were tired. There were virtually no spectators, those that could go home did.
An awesome night shot by K&D of the track. As you can see, the track is pretty well lit.
By the time we got home it was roughly 2:30AM and we had to leave again by 7ish, so it made for a very short night’s sleep. We should have probably camped or stayed in a nearby hotel or the trailer floor. Next time… lol.
We got to the track and they were already running the nitros (8:30AM). What a wonderful noise to wake up to on 3 hours of sleep haha. One thing was clear though, the track looked in amazing shape for the mains. Not too muddy, not too dusty.
The sun came out and it was really a beautiful day to go racing.
Doesn’t that track surface look awesome?
Drivers on the stand are in race mode and ready to go!
Lining up the cars on the back straight.
We had some snow falling during some of the racing action. Not really, just some sort of flowering blowing off the nearby trees. It was a fun sight though.
Finally we have the last aerial shot from K&D Action Photo. This was near the end of the day Sunday and you can see the track really drying out and grooving up.
Rather than go through a race by race recap (my memory sucks, and I didn’t get to watch all of them), I’m just going to show you the results and share a ton of photos we got from our friends Thomas Fiske & K&D Action Photo.
