Atomik V2MR 2WD Buggy Review

Overall I have enjoyed the buggy and am looking forward to converting it to a mid-motor and racing it on the clay and carpet. It is a fast buggy out of the box and needs little attention to setup. The quality of the parts and especially the shock assemblies are top notch. The only thing I have had issues with is the rear axles. It seems the drive pins are a little too large for the axles and make them weak. This is just the stub axle section of the CVD. If they drilled smaller holes, put in smaller pins, and then provided locking hexes, this kit would be just about perfect for anyone getting into 2wd buggy. Out of anything that could fail or be sub-par on a car, this really isn’t that big of a deal. Below is a shot of what has broken for us.

I never thought I would say it, but I enjoy 2wd buggy. I guess Kevin was right.

Now for the scores.

Value 9For $200 this is an incredible value. The kit comes with the parts to do mid or rear motor. The camber links are Titanium, which is usually an option part for other kits. The threaded shock housings are amazing quality for such a low price. Most buggies of this value are around $275+.
Build Quality 8-5Kevin did the build, but he didn’t seem to complain about anything. From the minimal amount of work I have had to do on it, it seems to be well thought out and uses a minimal amount of hardware. The shock pistons and transmission housing did need some clean up around the mold lines to get a good fit. The instruction manual is very detailed and easy to follow.
Performance 8This buggy out of the box is amazing. It is quick, nimble, and seems to handle everything you throw at it. It does take some work to get the off power steering up to the level of an Associated or Losi. I did remove some material from the steering blocks to gain throw. This buggy is great for an entry level driver, but can really fly in the hands of a pro.
Durability 7-5The only issues I had were 2 broken rear axles and the broken servo horn. Typically a person running every week will replace the plastic servo horns with aluminum ones so that issue might not be a problem. I have had no issues with broken arms, shock towers, transmission, or hubs as I would have expected.
Would I buy again? Absolutely! I am a die hard Associated guy, but this buggy has opened my eyes to other high quality, lost cost vehicles. Its quality rivals that of the other big companies but at a third of the cost. It has parts included that are upgrade options for other buggies. Way to go Atomik!

8-5Overall I give the Atomik V2MR a 8.5 out of 10. I’ve had a lot of fun with it.. and to put it in the A or B main with virtually no buggy experience at  3 big events is pretty impressive. It’s a good kit and we’re already swapping it over to mid motor for a followup to this initial review. We could have included it in this, but since most guys run rear motor, we figure this review is sufficient for the “standard setup”. Keep an eye out for the mid – motor followup.
If you haven’t check out Atomik RC‘s vehicle line up, now might be a good time.
