Team Soup visits RC Madness for 2012 Turkey Gobbler Off-Road Race

Part 2 of our venture to Connecticut. After hitting RCHR on the Nov 10th, we overnighted and hit RC Madness on the 11th for their Turkey Gobbler Indoor Carpet Off-Road Race. Yep, that’s right.. we went from dirt offroad, to carpet in the same weekend. We made little to no setup changes except tires and went on our way.

I’d been at the RC Madness facility before for the Short Course Nationals, but Matt had not. He was blown away by the sheer size of the place, and all that they offer. They have a 1/10 outdoor dirt track, a 1/8 outdoor dirt track, indoor carpet off-road, a carpet road course, an indoor rock crawling area, a outdoor sand drag pit, and an outdoor crawling/scaler course. There is a field across the street where they were flying huge gas heli’s too. It’s truly R/C MADNESS.

Anyways, this was another trophy race and our 3rd stop on our 2012 Children’s Miracle Network Benefit tour.. where we are raising money for CMN and visiting all the local, and some non-local tracks to raise awareness. Being so close to RCHR, it made sense to hit both events in the same weekend and make the long trip to CT worth while.

Below you’ll find a video of the 4wd SCT A Main. I recorded others but they turned out to be a pretty poor angle. This one gives you an idea of the layout. As you will see, the track is huge. Jason Punty took his T-RCE Slash 4×4 to the top of the podium by a hair in the closest finish I’ve ever seen in off-road. He held off teammate Mark Surprenant who gave everything he could at the end. Mark did manage to grab TQ for the class though.

Here’s a shot of the indoor track and the drivers stand.

I’m going to wander off for a minute and explore some of the rest of the Madness facility. I went outside and saw a big group of guys gathered around a dirt pile and decided to check it out.

This is where they have sand drag racing events. It’s between the main building and the crawling area.

So when I wandered over to the crawling area, I found they were actually having a competition. They actually gather every week for a little crawling/scaler competition with gate markers,  etc. Here are some shots of that stuff before I head on to the racing coverage.

One of the 1.9 scaler class.

Here is one of the crawling piles. They have machinery that can move dirt and they change the course often. There is another area further out back that they use as well.

As you can see, they are getting a decent turnout. They mentioned they are always looking for more participants. They have the indoor area for when the weather is horrible. Even if there is snow though, they will sometimes carve out some cool paths in the snow for some competition if they have the interest. If I lived closer I would definitely be bringing my CC-01 Unimog down. Maybe next time.

They use the SORRCA competition rules for scoring their events.
