Tamiya XV-01 Pro Chassis Build Up w/ Impreza WRX STI body

To steer this rig, we’re going with a basic servo. The Hitec HS-5485HB. It’s not metal geared, or particularly fast or strong, but it should be able to steer this car in the direction we want it to. We aren’t racing this thing, so we don’t need a servo with a .04s transit time.

Here is the next hardware bag. It includes some of the final pieces of hardware like the wheelnuts, and servo saver parts.

Let’s start with the servo saver. Tamiya makes you build theirs from scratch. First we find the correct splined back piece, and then overlay 3 servo saver springs onto it. My fingers hate this, as the springs are stiff and not the easiest to install. I’d actually much rather spend $5 on a Kimbrough servo saver.

It does work though when you get done putting it together.

Here it is completed with the front piece attached.

We then add a screw and ball nut to connect it to the steering linkage.

Then we install the servo mounts.

Ready for mounting.

Tamiya provides this special “sponge tape”. You cut it into a shape similar to this and install it onto the chassis, directly in front of where the servo saver will be moving. I believe it is to limit dust getting into the area between the chassis and servo.

Now we drop the servo into the chassis and secure it.

We then make the final turnbuckle (steering link), and pop that into place.

We now have a steerable car!

Hi, nice build. I just did mine but located the ESC at the rear instead as there is more room under the cover there, had no problem fitting the mamba Max in there. This also gives more room for the wires exiting the cover.
