Last weekend, August 25th and 26th, we attended the 1st Annual Intergalactic Short Course Championships. It was held at CRC Raceway in Rome NY.
The Intergalactic Short Course Championships consisted of a few short course classes, as well as a couple of support classes for those that like more than just short course. This was an all electric event. Here is the class list.
Short Course Classes
4wd Open Short Course
2wd Open Short Course
2wd Stock Short Course (13.5**)
Stock Short Course Buggy aka SCB (13.5**)
** In the case of both stock classes, 13.5 motors were used due to the sheer size of the track. This is a large 1/8th scale track.
Support Classes
Open 1/10 2wd Buggy
1/8 Electric Buggy
Practice started bright and early Saturday morning. Racers flocked to CRC from all over the Northeast. Early birds were on the track right away when practice opened, trying to find a setup that they could take to the podium.
CRC went through some minor track changes the week before the Intergalactic Short Course Championships. If you’ve seen our Slash 4×4 LCG Shootout video, that was what CRC’s track layout was before the Intergalactic Short Course Championships. You can see the new track layout for the Intergalactic Short Course Championships in our review of the Arrma ADX-10 Buggy.
While mostly the same, there was just enough of a change made so as to not give the locals an unfair advantage.
CRC’s own Brian “Dumper” Wynn was the race director for the weekend, calling the races from the timing booth. He and Frank Calandra held a brief driver’s meeting at 1:45pm Saturday to go over the rules, and the heat board for round 1 was posted.
All of the entered vehicles were lined up on the back straight for some pictures, and the RC Soup staff went to work looking for the first giveaway winner of the weekend.
We looked over the entire field in search of the best looking paint job. We unanimously chose the truck of Carl Doran. His body was painted by Greg Sass. Carl won a plaque for his trophy case and a CRC gift certificate courtesy of RC Soup.
We then went in search of the second award winner. This one would be a paint job from the opposite end of the spectrum. For the paint job that needed the most help, we chose the truck of Nate Reyes. Nate was given a new Pro-Line Flotek body, so that he could give his truck a new, flashy paint job.
With that behind us, it was time to go racing! Qualifying would work as follows. There would be 4 qualifying heats, followed by the Mains. Three qualifying heats were run on Saturday, with a 4th qualifying heat Sunday. Where you were seated in the Mains was based on a points system. The faster your time in relation to the rest of the class, the lower your score. TQ for the round got 0 points. Your best two heats were counted, and your bottom two were dropped.
