Traxxas Slash 4×4 LCG chassis Shootout!

And the winner is…….

The Shining Star Chassis!!

The SSC won both the lap time battle and the opinion survey. Congratulations!

So where do we go from here?

Each truck feels very different to drive on the track. You saw drivers compare the SSC to the Losi SCTE. Other drivers compared the Team RCE to the SC10 4×4. Both of those trucks dominate in their own ways, and we feel these two chassis could dominate in the same ways. Let me elaborate.

The SSC is a very tame truck to drive. It is very forgiving on big obstacles, and when it gets a little loose on the track. To me it is the perfect truck for a track such as our test track. Losi’s do very well on this track. The stock components we left in were the limiting factor here. With a proper ESC/motor combo, and decent shocks and springs, the SSC chassis will compete for top spot. No question there.

In much the same way, the Team RCE chassis was held back by the stock electronics and suspension. With the right esc/motor combo and better shocks, the Team RCE truck would also be very competitive. It is a little less forgiving on this type of track however, mainly due to it’s lightness. I can see the Team RCE dominating on a high bite track, say an indoor clay or carpet track.

The Chuckworks chassis comes in at less than half the price of the other two chassis. You could spring for the chassis, and have money left over for better shocks. Then of course you are still left with the stock VXL system, which we’ve shown isn’t that great for racing. But at least you take a step in the right direction. If you are on a budget, this is probably a good option, just expect to tinker with the suspension a bit to get it hooked up right on your track.

In summation you really can’t go wrong with any of these three given the right conditions. What kind of track do you run on? If it is a loamy track, with big jumps that get torn up by 1/8 scale buggies, in my opinion the SSC is for you. If you run a tight, indoor, high bite track, the RCE might be the ticket for you (or if you are comfortable with a very light truck). Are you on a tighter budget? Maybe the Chuckworks is the best for you.

Let us know which chassis you have out there, and what you think of it!

Would you like to see us take this to the next level with better ESC and motor combos, and better shocks? Let us know by commenting below! We hope you enjoyed reading this shootout as much as we enjoyed putting it together for you, and once again thanks to everyone that helped out. We couldn’t have done this without you!

I have the SSC and I LOVE it. My first observations were a lot like yours. It feels VERY stable and planted. IT has certainly converted my slash into a whole new machine. Right now, I run the Ultras with TiN coated shock shafts, Aluminum caps and RPM 2 stage pistons. It seems to work pretty well. I’m waiting on a center diff but it works like a dream even with the slipper. I can’t wait to get going with the C.diff.

I just have to install a Tenshock SC401 waiting to go into the SSC. With a Hobbywing SC8 controlling the VXL 3500 on stock gearing powered by a Gens Ace lipo, the car came off the track with the motor at 140F, lipo at 104F and ESC at around 100F in ambient temps of 95F! To me, that is spectacular. All in all, I’d suggest this chassis in a heartbeat.

You guys did some nice testing and I’m looking forward to phase 2. The SSC and TRCE (in particular) have given the slash 4×4 a new lease of life. I wonder how the Chuckworks will do with more tuning…

Great write-up!! I would like to see a shoot-out with a budget electronics setup, like a HW sc8 120a ESC with a tenshock sc401 or sc411 4000kv motor and a high end setup Tekin rx8 ESC and pro 4 4000kv motor. It would be nice to uprade the shocks to Losi, sc10 4×4 or PL powershocks

i would defenently like to see a electronic’s upgrade for the chassis and could the pro line pro track kit be included in the future tests?
