Project Overkill: RJ Speed Digger

Carnage huh? Project Overkill seems to be living up to it’s name. Two broken kingpins and a stripped out rear hub. Not too bad in hindsight. I was actually impressed that the spur gear did not implode. This whole project reminds me of that Vin Diesel quote “So much torque that it twisted the chassis off the line” from the original Fast & Furious movie.

We chewed up the tires pretty good. I was told a bead of CA glue around the outer edge seals the foams and will limit them from chunking like this. A little late to try now, but I will keep it in mind for future reference.

Then of course we broke the kingpin. The awkward landing sheered it right off at the nut. According to RJ Speed, this is not something that typically happens. I’m ruling it as it’s simply too fast for what it was designed for. We have a fix coming later in this post.

A shot of the broken kingpin while we were repairing it.

This was the replacement kingpin we got from Buddyboys R/C (our Local Hobby Shop). They are longer, and intended for the RJ Speed Legends and Sport kits. We had to shim them out, but it got us up and running (for a little bit anyways).

We then snapped the other side off…

We decided to run it 3-wheeled. Dumb idea. It got airborne again and did a pretty spectacular flip. When it came to rest, we could see that the wheel screws stripped right out of the hub, and the wheel wedged itself in the fender.

We also had an un-stuck servo. Again, using actual servo mounts would probably prove useful.

Final carnage shot.

Close up of the stripped hub.

Alright.. up next, our kingpin solution!
