Tamiya CC-01 Mercedes-Benz Unimog Review

While we were out doing the review, we (Aron of AJS Machine) opted to also take some exciting videos for your enjoyment. They are short, but you should still get the idea behind what we were trying to accomplish.

The first video is a shot of the CC-01 Unimog by itself, going under a rock ledge and turning a corner. This whole platform drops off about 3 feet off to the left of the frame. It doesn’t look as hard as it actually was in the video.

The below video is just a quick passing by the camera over a small rock bridge. Aron is pulling his prized AJS Machine Off-Road Trailer.

Some trail cruising below. At the end of the Unimog’s run you can really notice that lack of drag brake mentioned earlier as it barrels down the slope.

The following 3 videos are all of the same section of rocks. In this first one you can see the CC-01 breezes up the incline. Aron’s Cherokee was a little less fortunate as it struggled to find traction. Jarodd seemed to have no issue either.

This is Aron’s redemption video, although still struggling to pull the weight of that trailer. This is a case where wheel speed helps you out of a potentially bad situation.

Last but not least, our #Fail video… or bloopers? Jarodd and I both struggled with this setup (the rocks are setup slightly different from the previous 2 videos), and hilarity ensues.

Value @ a street price of under $180, and including an LED Light set, Electronic Speed Controller, and a motor.. it is very hard to beat this price point. I wish it came with bearings and maybe better tires from the start, but it is still a bargain.
Appearance Do I really need to say anything here? It’s a UNIMOG!! There really isn’t a cooler 4×4 out there in my eyes. Tamiya always has great detail in their bodies and decal sheets, this kit is no exception.
Performance Steering is pretty poor (mostly due to locked diffs), but I think design of certain parts plays into that a little bit. The stock gearing is a bit high for trail running but that can be overcome with a slower motor. It sits sort of low and has a short wheelbase which makes it a little unstable on the rocks.
Durability I’m not sure what you could break on this truck besides the mirrors. Everything is made from super durable Tamiya plastic and should hold up to years of abuse. I had no issues during my testing.
Would I buy again? YES! Despite any shortcomings I’ve mentioned, this is still a VERY fun truck. With a new ESC and a slower motor, I’m sure it will be perfect for trail running/rock crawling.

Overall, I give it a 4.5 out of 5.

It’s a SUPER fun little truck, at a VERY reasonable price. The included ESC is not my favorite for what I was attempting to do with it, but it works and will get you running until you can afford a better one. It has a really high cost to fun ratio. The CC-01 may not be the most capable rig out there, but it WILL hold it’s own. If the Unimog isn’t your thing, it IS offered in a couple other different body styles as well. When looking for your next basher/crawler/scaler, don’t count this little guy out!

CC-01 is a fun platform and your Unimog almost makes me want to buy another, but I want a Blackfoot III first.
