2WD Short Course Truck Shootout

Kyosho Ultima SC Readyset

This is the Kyosho Ultima SC Electric 2WD Ready to Run Truck Kit. The Ultima SC has been designed with all of the racing performance in mind, and it is in compliance with all ROAR regulations. This Ready Set Kit is not just for the backyard basher. This is a race ready chassis with many of the high performance traits from the Ultima RT5. The chassis plate is 40mm longer than the RT5, and its light and strong. The front and rear suspension is symmetrical, so a single replacement arm can be used on either side of the truck for convenience and economical practicality.

Specifications:

  • Length: 550mm
  • Width: 296mm
  • Height: 197mm
  • Wheelbase: 329.5mm
  • Weight: 1.74 kg (approximate weight)

Handling

Matt – (4.5) Handled very well, very smooth cornering. A little plush, but never bottomed out
Kevin – (5) One word. PLUSH. This thing corners great. Easily corners on throttle
Jarodd  – (4) Good cornering speed, good low speed cornering
Jim – (5) Truck turned in excellent. Very well mannered in any conditions
Average Score: 4.625

Jumping Ability

Matt – (4) Very soft landings. There were a couple of nose down flights, like the rear was being thrown in the air by the face of the jump.
Kevin – (5) Flies a lot like the SC10. Nice and level and soaks up the jumps amazingly
Jarodd – (4) Great jumping. Flies nose down but predictable.
Jim – (5) Excellent jumping. Flies level, would not bottom out.
Average Score: 4.5

Speed

Matt – (4) Top speed was good. Corner speed was great. Tire upgrade would make corner speed exceptional
Kevin – (3.5) Good corner speed, good top end. Definitely not the slowest of the group
Jarodd – (3.5) Good top end and torque
Jim – (3) Stock gearing and stock KO G20 brushed motor had good acceleration but lacked top speed. Gearing up a tooth or two on the pinion would help. Fast in corners and over bumps/stutter bumps
Average Score: 3.5

Wrenchability

Matt – (3) Servo looks tough to change, otherwise not too bad
Kevin – (3) Looks straight forward
Jarodd – (3) Simple layout
Jim – (3) Servo difficult to access, otherwise ok.
Average Score: 3

Durability

Matt – (3) No problems during run
Kevin – (3) Have heard its fragile, but had no breakage during runs
Jarodd – (3)
Jim – (3) Stock shocks were weak, upgraded to Velvets. No problems during shootout
Average Score: 3

Notes

Matt – The Ultima oozes confidence. It makes you feel like a better driver. An upgrade in tires might just make this truck unstoppable.
Kevin – Anyone wanna buy an SC10?
Jarodd – Parts availability may be an issue
Jim – This truck has the upgraded shocks and servo, so its not truly stock. But both are worthwhile upgrades.

not a bad write up. i dont agree with everything nor do i disagree with everything. come on…. the slash beat the blitz ??? 😉

  2. Richard Decker says:

I agree with you George, I had to remind HSG that a Blitz won the 100 lap indoor LOSI race this past winter…LOL, all kidding aside, a very good article, very detailed and insightful.

  3. Hispeedguy says:

Well, to be fair, I think the servo in the Blitz was getting ready to give up, so the steering was pretty slow and sluggish. I ran the that same RTR Blitz on the carpet at Buddy Boys and CRC last winter in stock form and w/ a 17.5 Novak BL system and Savox 1258 servo. I couldn’t get it to turn very good then either 🙂
Fun factor was very high on all 5 though.

  4. Matt says:

It was a total blast doing the test. Testing different vehicles is always subjective. We were basing our opinions on how those particular trucks performed. If my SC10 were the one we tested with it would have been a very different story.

This is a very good write up of these vehicles for someone new entering this hobby or anyone wanting to buy another rc car. If you guys need help when you do the 4wd I would love to participate. I think it is awesome that you guys did this. I am not the best but I have been in this sport racing for 18yrs. Again keep up the good work this is very useful information. JR
