Spektrum 2.4GHz DX2S Transmitter Review

Spektrum (www.spektrumrc.com) is the leader in spread spectrum technology. The recently released DX2S radio was something of high interest for me so I recently purchased one from one of my local hobby shops, Buddy Boys Toys and Trains (www.buddyboystoysandtrains.com). I was looking to upgrade my current race-day radio line-up from a bucket full consisting of Losi-sport, Tactic and Traxxas-link radios. I really enjoy running several classes at my local track and inevitably have had to carry a designated radio for each vehicle. Not any longer!

The first and most obvious benefit to this new radio is that it is 2.4GHz FM technology. No interference of any kind unlike obsolete AM radio systems. No longer is there any need to register your frequency at the scoring table before racing. Secondly, the DX2S system can store up to 5 different RC vehicles at any given time in memory. This is perfect for my race day. I only have to bring one radio to the track to run all of my RC’s.

When I first unpacked the radio I was impressed with the fit and finish of the unit and how it felt in my hand. Grips were very comfortable and it even comes with different sizes so you can adjust the grip to your needs. Radio is lightweight (only takes 4 AA batteries) and balanced. The steering wheel is comfortable with smooth steering action. Directions in the provided manual were simple and straightforward. I spent 30 minutes swapping a couple of my spare Losi MRX3000 (sport) receivers into my vehicles that needed the upgrade. I then went thru the bind process for each vehicle and that was all. 5 vehicles bound to the radio in less than 15 minutes. They all went thru the bind process without issue and worked flawlessly. I did have to reverse the steering servo on 2 of my vehicles, but a few clicks thru the DX2S on screen menu and it was corrected quickly and easily. The adjustability and tuning available with the DX2S is excellent, much better than what I was accustomed to.

Another great benefit of the Spektrum DX2S system is the price. At $119, it is a great value for any racer on a budget or not. It will bind to all Losi/Horizon/Spektrum 2.4GHz receivers. For example in my case where I own several Losi mini sliders, mini-EDM and mini-late model in addition to 1/10 scale Slider/Sprint car, all that was required was binding the car to the radio since they all have the stock Losi MRX3000 receiver. What can I say? It doesn’t get any easier than this.

This system has the ability to do telemetry with the SPM1205 and SPMSR3300T receivers. (Telemetry= 2 way data transfer to monitor motor temperature and performance, battery levels and more). I am not currently equipped to set up my vehicles for telemetry yet. I run all Losi MRX1000 and SR3100 receivers in my RC’s bound to my DX2S radio. I will do another review once I step to that level of technology.

All in all, for the price the Spektrum DX2S radio system is an excellent product and an excellent value for any RC enthusiast. The ability to bind 5 vehicles into memory is a great race day bonus. More room in the toolbox and less stuff to carry! Did I forget to mention fewer RC radios = less AA batteries to maintain.

Thumbs up!
